ALBUM REVIEW: David Rosales - "Brave Ones"

David Rosales is a Los Angeles-native, raised in a mixed family of seven brothers and sisters, where upon his 11th Birthday was given his first guitar by his grandfather. He instantly fell in love with the instrument and began writing songs of his own. Since that time, David has been involved in several significant projects, most notably Hard Rock band Silent Treatment, the Americana duo David & Olivia, and now, continuing as a solo artist.

The Americana singer-songwriter has previously released two solo EPs (Smile, Along the Way), but the recently released Brave Ones is the first full-length from the beach loving family man. Brave Ones is just what you would expect from an Americana artist, it is full of love, loss, and all emotion.

Rosales had this to say about the 11 song album: "I get into some pretty heavy subjects, but overall, the album has a positive vibe. It’s uplifting and makes me feel better after I listen to it…I’m hopeful it does the same for the listener.”

From the first track on the album, which happens to be the title track, it is a toe-tapping collection of songs perfect for a Sunday afternoon spent beachside. Songs like "Lift Your Hands" and "Free Your Mind" are up-beat, while other tracks like "Sunshine" or "Brighter Days" are more slow tempo and could be pictured perfectly playing over a bluetooth speaker while you relax in a hammock.

All 11 songs are enjoyable and full of pure talent of songwriting, but my favorite song from this album has to be "La Batalla." The track begins with very traditional Mexican style of brass instruments, which is then again present in the chorus. The song's lyrics draw into his families involvement in the battle of the Alamo. Being a descendant of a soldier that fought in this pivotal part of the Texas revolution, Rosales wanted to bring attention to the importance of the battle. Personally, I was raised in Texas and the Alamo is a very important part of history; outside of Texas, it is an overlooked but important event in American history.

Overall Brave Ones is everything you'd want from a singer-songwriter release. Anyone that enjoys blues, country, rock, or any type of music can find appreciation in this collection of memories and emotions.

David has released three incredible music videos for the tracks “Sunshine,” “Good to Be Alive,” and “Lift Your Hands"
