Cigarettes After SexCigarettes After SexCigarettes After Sex in Charlotte NC at The Underground I was one of those people who highly anticipated the release of Cigarettes After Sex debut album last summer. I even had a broken leg when I called up my local record shop to hold a copy for me.

Their melon collie yet almost cut throat lyrics were the perfect soundtrack for a woman who was bed ridden and heartsick.

When I arrived at The Underground to catch their show I was surprised by how many people were in attendance. The show actually ended up selling out by the end of the night and while the tracks were slow and soft, many times you could hear the crowd singing along, especially to their closing song "Apocalypse."

Founded in 2008, Cigarettes After Sex has been performing in small spaces for years and finally gained traction after a successful run on Youtube and of course after their debut LP.

When it comes to overall aesthetics this band is quintessential for anyone trying to woe someone with a perfect record. Their transcendent sound mentally transports me to a dark, underground club in New York, swaying back and forth with a drink and a cigarette wondering who my next conquest might be. Which is a feat easily done when they choose to perform solo, with no opener. They donned all black with single spot lights at the back and side of the stage to create the perfect atmosphere for their adult lullabies.

However not everyone at these shows wants to be transported to another space, most carried on loud conversations which made the experience a little disappointing. Singer and guitarist Greg Gonzalez voice sounds exactly like the recording, I highly suggest getting there early and finding a space in the front among the more respectful and appreciative attendees.

Overall, Cigarettes After Sex is a dished served best in small, urban clubs and respectful audience members. But to truly get an uninterrupted experience listening to the album will be just as enjoyable as their live performance doesn't stray from their produced sound.
