Back in 2018, Shakey Graves was scheduled to appear at The Ritz; however, Hurricane Florence had other ideas and the show, along with other scheduled shows that week were postponed or cancelled.
Shakey Graves wasn't going to leave us hanging though, and the show from 2018 was rescheduled for May 11, 2019.
The night began with a wonderful set from a local artist by the name of Kate Rhudy. Kate is currently on a solo tour of her own, but felt right at place to open up this show. On stage with her acoustic guitar and her two fellow band mates, one on the stand-up bass and one on the electric guitar, Rhudy expressed her joy of being back home after days on the road and felt very welcomed by the large crowd.

Following Kate Rhudy was a band that was actually on tour with Shakey Graves, but they were drastically different from what the rest of the night was going to be like. Illiterate Light is a rock duo that absolutely tore the roof off of the building. That's right, just two of them. Their energetic performance was something that many full rock bands could not achieve. I don't know about anyone else, but the performance from Jeff Gorman (guitar/vocals) and Jake Cochran (drums/vocals) caught me by complete surprise. Gorman's wild guitar playing was accompanied at times with him stomping his foot on a keyboard, while Cochran's stand-up drumming performance had me mesmerized.

Once we all had a chance to catch our breath, the stage was set for the moment everyone had been waiting for; and literally waiting for since 2018. Shakey Graves took the stage for a solo performance of his first few songs with his guitar, a suitcase being used as a kick drum, and a tambourine. The songs he was belting out were getting shouted right back at him from the sell out crowd and the smile on his face showed the joy of finally being able to perform for this Raleigh crowd.
The ending of the intimate beginning of his show was met with the entrance of the rest of his band mates, which he introduced as ex-lovers that left him; a joke that was leading into his next song. With the addition of the new faces on stage, the backdrop of a interesting looking cityscape type scene was revealed, which sort of resembled the cover art of Graves' latest album Can't Wake Up.
After a lengthy 15 song set, things were over just as quickly as they had began; at least, that i what it felt like for me. I guess that saying is true, time flies you're having fun, and my gosh was this night a load of fun!
